Fleming Outlines Necessary Requirements for Iran Nuclear Deal

Statement

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement before the Iran nuclear deal deadline on June 30:

"Although the Administration is eager to strike a deal with Iran, the U.S. must continue to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons capability under any circumstance. If we want assurances of Iran's inability to even consider building a weapon, any negotiated agreement must require that Iran fully dismantle all nuclear infrastructures, including its uranium and plutonium stockpiles. A good deal must grant international inspectors full access to all sites at anytime, including military facilities, to ensure the Iranian government is forthcoming on its nuclear programs. It is also critical that the United States insist on maintaining sanctions until Iran has met all its commitments included in the deal. Any sanctions relief must be gradual with clearly outlined consequences for Iranian disregard or non-compliance.

"While Iran insists its nuclear goals are peaceful, it refuses to 'come clean,' about its ambitions - as Prime Minister Netanyahu told a joint session of Congress in March - and has also been caught twice operating secret facilities. Iran's Supreme Leader also appears unwilling to comply fully with requirements laid out in a framework deal announced in April between international negotiators.

"Iran must also recognize Israel's right to exist and any deal U.S. negotiators agree to must ensure that minimum requirements concerning the safety of Israel, our allies in the Middle East, and the U.S. are met now and for future generations."
