Fleming: SCOTUS Decision is Unheard of Reinterpretation of Federal Law

Statement

Date: June 25, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled that all Americans are eligible for Obamacare subsidies whether they signed up through a state or federal exchange:

"Today's King v. Burwell ruling will now become as much of a SCOTUS legacy as President Obama's, as we witnessed today's blatant reinterpretation of the words and intent of Obamacare. When the words, "established by the State" can be construed to mean "established by the State or Federal government," I agree with Justice Scalia that "Words no longer have meaning…."

"President Obama's health care law was written with the singular intent of forcing all 50 states and the District of Columbia to set up health care exchanges using federal subsidies as the monetary reward. When only 13 states and D.C. followed through, the President had to rework his strategy using his pen and phone to force Americans onto Obamacare health care exchanges.

"It is now up to Congress to get rid of Obamacare, and provide relief to the millions of Americans living under a bad law that has wreaked havoc on our health care system, placing financial burdens on hard working families and small businesses alike. I will continue to vote for the repeal of Obamacare and work with my colleagues on common-sense health care reform that will give all Americans, not just a few, access to quality and affordable health care."
