Cornyn Urges Human Rights Focus for President's Meeting with Top Vietnamese Official

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) joined Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), James Lankford (R-OK), David Vitter (R-LA), John Boozman (R-AR), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) in urging President Obama to make human rights in Vietnam a top priority during his meeting today with Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, Secretary General of the Vietnamese Communist Party.

In a letter to President Obama, the Senators wrote, "For twenty years, the United States Government has cultivated a close relationship with the government of Vietnam. However, Vietnam remains a one-party state that treats many of its own citizens -- particularly those who share the U.S. commitment to freedom and democracy -- in ways that systematically transgress the minimum standards expected of any government that wishes to be a member in the community of civilized nations."
