On Tuesday, May 26, 2015, Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02) led a walking tour of downtown Amherst to visit with small business owners and other community leaders. Joining McGovern on the tour was Amherst Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Don Courtemanche as well as other members of the community for a total of about 40 people.
Congressman McGovern started the walking tour at the Amherst Chamber of Commerce office at 28 Amity Street. Included in the walking tour were the Jones Library, the proposed site of a new downtown Amherst parking structure, The Mercantile, B.Home, Folcwald Gallery, the construction site of the Kendrick Place Apartments, Art Alive, and Amherst Cinema.
The walking tour concluded at the Vespa Osteria, a brand new Italian/Mediterranean inspired Amherst restaurant. Congressman McGovern joined restaurant owner Jonathan Welch for the ribbon cutting that officially opened the restaurant for business. McGovern said the tour and the ribbon cutting of Osteria Vespa indicate to him that Amherst is doing well. "This shows Amherst is continuing to thrive," he said.
