Sen. Ted Cruz blasted the Iran nuclear deal outlined earlier Thursday, calling it a "bad deal" with a regime that cannot be trusted.

"We're still looking at what the exact details are of the deal. Everything that's been released so far suggests that this deal will dramatically undermine the national security of the United States," Cruz told a crowd of 250 or so Republicans at a hotel in Des Moines, at his third town hall campaign event of the day. "This administration does not understand the people with whom they are dealing. Iran is run by theocratic zealots who embrace death and suicide" and with such adversaries, rational deterrence isn't possible.

"Ordinary cost benefit analysis doesn't work," Cruz said.

As president, he said, he would repudiate the deal "on Day 1″ of his presidency.

Republicans have roundly condemned the framework deal outlined by negotiators from the United States and other world powers. President Barack Obama touted the preliminary deal, telling reporters in a Rose Garden appearance that this "historic understanding with Iran" creates the most robust inspection system in history, while blocking Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

"If Iran cheats, the world will know it," Obama said.
