Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after voting in favor of a resolution to require Congress to either debate and pass an Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the Islamic State (IS) or bring troops sent after August 17th, 2014 back home.
"I voted in favor of the McGovern amendment to require Congress to authorize military action in Iraq and Syria because only Congress has the authority to authorize war. We have failed to fulfill our obligations for too long. Minnesotans deserve a robust debate before we send more troops and weapons to Iraq and Syria.
"Military intervention by the United States will not bring lasting peace in Iraq and Syria. The conflict has a political solution, which begins with helping the innocent women, children, and men caught in the crosshairs between IS and the Syrian civil war, and ends with Assad leaving power."
