Rep. Maxine Waters Statement on Passage of H.R. 5: 'Student Success Act'

Statement

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, issued the following statement in response to the passage of H.R. 5, the "Student Success Act':

"Today I was disappointed by the passage of H.R. 5 -- the so called "Student Success Act' -- which guts funding for education across the board, shifts resources away from the most needy students, fails to guarantee educational equality for all students, and fails to support teachers and principals around the country.

Under H.R. 5, federal dollars would be intentionally shifted away from districts with the highest levels of poverty. In my district alone, this could result in a funding loss of $80.6 million -- a cut of 23.8%, more than any other district in the nation. We must ensure that a child's zip code does not determine the quality of education he or she may receive, and H.R. 5 is an inherent step backward for educational equity."
