On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Dearborn) announced a $500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to support the Downriver Community Conference's brownfield redevelopment program.

DCC, which is based in Southgate, will leverage the grant with other public-private investments to assess, clean and redevelop contaminated properties, which will boost the local economy and support local jobs.

"The Downriver Community Conference has strong record of successful brownfield development in southeast Michigan and this award is a testament to their great work," Dingell said. "This funding will allow DCC to continue to redevelop contaminated sites and transform them into green spaces or new centers of commerce that fuel economic growth and enhance quality of life, while also protecting the environment and public health."

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up and sustainably reuse brownfields sites.

Since the inception of the EPA's Brownfields Program in 1995, the DCC Brownfield Consortium has received more than $9 million for assessment and cleanup projects, generating more than $100 million in local economic activity.
