The Importance Of Early Childhood Education

Dear Neighbors,

All of America's students deserve access to quality education that will help them succeed. Study after study shows that early childhood education is crucial to a student's ability to perform well in the classroom, through college and later in life.

Early learning is one of the most important investments we can make. A strong education system will prepare the next generation of Americans for the jobs of the future and promote economic security. In fact, a 2009 study found that investment in preschool education increases gross domestic product (GDP) over the long-term. Research shows people who were enrolled in a preschool program earned up to $2,000 more per month than those who did not attend a preschool.

This is why I am an advocate for federal funding for early childhood education. By appropriating funds toward programs like Head Start, we are taking steps toward preparing our young people for bright futures.

Our country is in need of a robust early childhood education system. We should have free early childhood programs and help provide access to kindergarten. We also need to bring parents into the discussion and engage them in early learning practices. And lastly, we need the best and brightest teachers who can help set up our children for a lifetime of success.

I plan on continuing to support early childhood education through legislation, and am a cosponsor of the Strong Start for America's Children Act. This bill is an innovative federal-state partnership to put quality early learning and child care opportunities within reach for families with children under 5 years old.
