Cramer: House Passes H.R. 5, the Student Success Act

Today, Congressman Kevin Cramer joined a majority of the members of the United States House of Representatives to pass H.R. 5, the Student Success Act. This legislation replaces the existing No Child Left Behind law, and significantly updates and reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

"The Student Success Act prevents the federal government from using coercive tactics to force states to adopt education standards like Common Core. It is inappropriate for the Secretary of Education and federal bureaucrats to use waivers and education funding to force states to adopt Common Core. States, not the federal government should determine their own education standards. Our goal should be consolidating and eliminating unnecessary or duplicative federal programs. Local flexibility and local control allow parents and school districts to address local challenges and more effectively use education resources, " said Cramer. "I have been contacted by many parents concerned about the imposition of Common Core in their school districts. As the father of a second grade student I see firsthand the cause for their concern."
