Issue Position

"As Speaker of the House John Boehner said in remarks prior to being sworn in as a member of the 114th Congress, 'Skepticism of the government is healthy, and in our time, quite understandable.'

"I agree with that statement and I don't doubt that those of my constituents who expressed their displeasure with his re-election as Speaker agree with it, as well.

"For those individuals, I offer the following food for thought.

"Louie Gohmert and Ted Yoho received five votes for Speaker combined, including their own. Daniel Webster, who is a good guy, announced his candidacy the morning of the vote. He received 12. None of them even had the support of their home state delegations. With all due respect to those gentlemen, I am not voting against Speaker Boehner in favor of no plan, no statement of priorities and no leadership structure to pursue policy objectives.

"So we 'fire Boehner' and start a month-long or longer election for his successor at a time when we should be dismantling the Affordable Care Act, taking care of our veterans, reducing the deficit, navigating foreign affairs and solving Nevada's federal issues? That's a great plan, if you want to continue the dig on Congress as a place where nothing gets done.

"I am perfectly fine with differing views. Not everyone is going to agree all the time. But it is a bit discouraging to get lit up on an issue where in some cases a person has taken a thought or two from one source and treated it like the complete and final word.

"There have been times when I was disappointed and even angered by the actions or inactions of Speaker Boehner. But he was also instrumental in helping to advance a number of Nevada's high priorities from bills into law via the NDAA and the CRomnibus. It is my sincere belief that Nevada and the country are better served by a vote for the guy from Ohio than a vote for no plan at all.

"I will continue to do what I think is in the best interests of Nevada and the country and I feel fairly comfortable in keeping company with such conservatives as Reps. Raúl Labrador, Mick Mulvaney, Jim Jordan, John Fleming, Jason Chaffetz, Matt Salmon, Marsha Blackburn, Tom Graves, Tom McClintock, Rob Bishop, Bill Flores, Tom Price, Jeb Hensarling, Sam Johnson, Ron DeSantis and Rob Woodall, all of whom, to name a few, voted for Boehner.
