Issue Position

In Our P-20 Education System, Senator Tokuda is committed to:

*Ensuring that all children have access to high quality early learning opportunities through a mixed delivery system that includes public preschool classrooms, private providers, and family child interactive learning programs, and are academically, socio-emotionally, and cognitively ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.
*Enhancing Early Intervention services to ensure that our youngest children do not fall further behind, both in terms of initial screening and maintaining contact with those who no longer qualify for services.
*Continuing to communicate with our Principals and be an advocate for those things they have said would make a difference for their schools, like more support for Information Technology, Repair and Maintenance needs on the neighbor islands, flexibility on the definition of instructional time, and increased classroom and program space in communities statewide.
*Supporting the DOE and UH School of Nursing Pilot APRN Program and efforts to increase the quality of health services provided to our students, potentially identifying ways to look at it from a broader public health perspective. With access to care being a real barrier for so many of our students, families and faculty, the creation of School Based Public Health Centers are real options in many of our communities.
*Continuing to support the University of Hawaii in their efforts to obtain and implement performance funding tied to each campus's strategic goals and objectives.
