U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, released the following statement in honor of Memorial Day:

"Today, we honor our brave men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country, our freedoms and our values. These individuals leave behind a legacy of duty, honor and pride, and a state and country that is safer and stronger because of their incredible sacrifice. America stands as a beacon of hope to oppressed people across the world because of the sacrifice and dedication of those who have proudly served in uniform throughout our nation's history, and we owe them and their families our endless gratitude. As Michiganders gather with family and friends today, I encourage us all to pause and remember those we have lost and thank the veterans and servicemembers in our communities for their continued service and their willingness to risk their lives to keep our country safe."
