Congressman Collins Advances Immigration Law Enforcement Bill

Congressman Doug Collins, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, praised his fellow committee members for approving the Michael Davis, Jr. and Danny Oliver in Honor of State and Local Law Enforcement Act (H.R. 1148) that would grant states and localities more authority to enforce federal immigration law. Rep. Collins (GA09) is an original cosponsor of the bill.

"Congress is addressing the President's failure to uphold our country's immigration laws," said Rep. Collins."Due to his abdication of responsibility, our states and localities, including Northeast Georgia, must have better tools to protect themselves."

He explained that the bill, named for two California police officers killed in the line of duty, contains language of his Immigration Accountability Act targeting fee accounts the Department of Homeland Security was using to implement President Obama's amnesty of five million illegal immigrants, before a federal judge halted the president's order.

"The United States is the most welcoming country in the world, but we have immigration laws for a reason. We need to make sure well-meaning people, not potential criminals, are entering in the prescribed manner and following the rules," said the Congressman. "But for political reasons, the Obama Administration has abandoned our rules and safety."

Rep. Collins cited provisions in the law enforcement bill that would improve national security. It would permit border agents to carry firearms, add detention facilities and expedite removal of criminal aliens, in addition to increase visa monitoring and rein in the Administration's abuse of prosecutorial discretion to release broad categories of unlawful aliens.
