Rep. Elise M. Stefanik will play a role in negotiating the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act as the only freshman member of the bill's House-Senate conference committee.

House Speaker John Boehner selected Ms. Stefanik, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee and as vice chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Readiness, for the role Thursday.

"The federal government has no greater role than providing for our nation's defense, and I look forward to working together with my fellow conferees on both sides of the aisle to negotiate a strong NDAA that will give our troops the resources they need to keep our nation safe," Ms. Stefanik said.

She has been helping to build initiatives within the NDAA, including a $30 million provision for a new East Coast Missile Defense Site. Fort Drum is a potential location for the site, which could open more employment opportunities at the post.

She also helped include $19 million for the Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Fort Drum
