Rep. Waters Commends Los Angeles City Council for Approving Increase to the Minimum Wage

Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, voiced her support for the Los Angeles City Council's decision to raise the minimum wage to $15-per-hour by 2020. Her statement follows:

"Yesterday, Los Angeles became a leader in the fight to provide workers and families with a living wage. With more than 800,000 residents living on the minimum wage, almost half of the workforce, this ordinance is especially important for the city of Los Angeles and a step in the right direction for low-income, hardworking families. No one who works hard and works full time should be living in poverty -- raising the wage is not only good for the economy, it's the right thing to do."

By a 14 to 1 vote, the L.A. City Council on Tuesday instructed the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance raising the $9-an-hour base wage to $15 by 2020. Los Angeles is the largest city to adopt a major raise in the minimum wage.
