Congresswoman Waters' Statement on King v. Burwell

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee, released the following statement after the Supreme Court announced its decision in King v. Burwell:

"Today, for the second time, the Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act. The Court's decision ensures that all eligible Americans will continue to have access to affordable health insurance, regardless of their home state.

This decision is a victory for the American people and President Obama. Despite the many attacks by the conservative right wing, President Obama's signature legislation, commonly referred to as Obamacare, has been upheld and protected by the Supreme Court on a 6-3 vote.

The Affordable Care Act is working for American families. The tax credits that were targeted by this court case have helped millions of Americans in every state obtain affordable health insurance, including more than 1.2 million people in California. After five years of the Affordable Care Act, discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions has become a thing of the past, and the nation's uninsured rate has fallen to 11.9 percent, its lowest level ever.

Republicans have voted 60 times to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act, and they have lost twice in their efforts to overturn it before the Supreme Court. It is time for Republicans to stop trying to repeal, undermine and overturn the Affordable Care Act and start focusing on growing the economy, creating jobs and moving our country forward."
