Thune named to Highway Bill Conference Committee

May 27th, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist today named Senator John Thune a member of the highway bill conference committee, assuring that South Dakota's interests will be represented as Senate and House negotiators complete the Highway Bill.

"There are some big differences between the House and Senate highway bills that must be addressed so that rural states like South Dakota are not hurt," Thune said. "I will fight for South Dakota's transportation needs. A strong transportation infrastructure will create a stronger economy in rural states like South Dakota."

Thune was appointed as a conferee after helping write the Senate highway bill as a member of the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee.
