SCIA Passes Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act

Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs (SCIA), praised the Committee's passage of S. 248, the "Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2015." This legislation will clarify the rights of tribes on Indian lands under the National Labor Relations Act. The bill, S. 248, was introduced by Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) and had several co-sponsors. The bill will now advance to be considered by the full Senate.

"Today, the Committee passed important legislation that will empower tribes and respect them as sovereign governments," said Chairman Barrasso. "Tribal sovereignty allows Indian tribes to govern themselves, regulate tribal businesses, and provide essential services to tribal Members. We'll continue to move forward with this bill and work to bring it to the Senate floor for a final vote."
