Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today regarding the new fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles proposed jointly by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). These proposed standards, which build on standards already in place, would apply to large trucks and buses as well as large pick-up trucks and vans. They are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 270 million metric tons and save vehicle owners more than $50 billion in fuel costs.
"Yesterday, Pope Francis made clear that we have a collective duty to fight climate change and protect our planet. Today, the Obama Administration has taken an important step forward in that battle. The proposed standards will allow us to have more efficient vehicles, significantly reducing greenhouse gases that cause global warming. They will also spur innovation, strengthen our role as world leaders in vehicle technology, and make us more economically competitive in the years ahead. Consumers will also save money on shipping costs. This rule will move us down the road toward a cleaner and more prosperous future."
