Governor Hassan Encourages Participation in Youth Violence Prevention Initiative

Continuing her efforts to strengthen the safety of New Hampshire's communities and schools through Media Power Youth's media literacy program, Governor Maggie Hassan today encouraged parents, educators and young people to take advantage of the final teacher training of the 2014-2015 school year in the state's public-private Youth Violence Prevention Initiative.
The training, conducted by Media Power Youth, is scheduled for Friday, May 22, at Health Trust NH, 25 Triangle Park Drive, Concord, New Hampshire, from 9:00am-4:00pm. Registration remains open through Wednesday, May 20.
"By helping parents, educators and young people understand media's role in influencing behavior with its evidence-based approach, Media Power Youth is making schools and communities across the state safer," Governor Hassan said. "Ensuring the safety of our young people, our schools and our communities is government's most important responsibility, and with schools and districts representing more than 200 communities in New Hampshire involved in the public-private initiative, Media Power Youth is playing an important role in our ongoing public and school safety efforts."
Through a grant from the Office of the Attorney General, the initiative enables Media Power Youth, a Manchester-based nonprofit and expert in media literacy, to provide free curricula and training for New Hampshire teachers and school professionals to implement in their schools. The full-day training provides educators the skills and knowledge for successful implementation of the program, along with professional development hours.
The evidence-based curriculum, Media Literacy for Safe & Healthy Choices, is designed for fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students. It promotes healthy decisions and positive use of media while students learn about the media's role and influence on violence, aggression and bullying; tobacco and alcohol use; and food choices.
For a select number of model communities, the initiative also provides Screenshots, a violence prevention intervention for middle and high schools, and parent education.Governor Hassan Encourages Participation in Youth Violence Prevention Initiative
