Governor Hassan's Statement on Signing Senate Bill 47

Statement

Date: May 7, 2015
Location: Concord, NH

Governor Maggie Hassan today issued the following statement after signing Senate Bill 47, repealing the payment of subminimum wages to persons with disabilities:

"New Hampshire has a strong tradition of treating all of our citizens with respect and dignity, and by making New Hampshire the first state to prohibit employers from paying sub-minimum wages to people who experience disabilities, Senate Bill 47 helps build on that tradition. It is significant that no New Hampshire employers currently engage in this practice, reflecting our understanding as Granite Staters that fully including all people is critical to the strength of our society, our democracy and our economy. I thank Senator Hosmer, the bipartisan group of legislators, and all of the advocates who came together to pass this bill. I am honored to sign Senate Bill 47 into law in order to continue our state's efforts to help ensure that people who experience disabilities can fully participate in our communities and achieve greater economic independence."
