Email Update: 100 Days

Statement

I sent an email update on Thursday on my frist hundred days serving you in my second term in Congress.

Yesterday marked my 100th day serving you in my second term in Congress.

Like many folks in Sacramento County, I've been frustrated with the gridlock in our nation's capital. Both parties need to stop the finger pointing, find common ground, and work together to move our country forward.

That said, we have made some progress in critical areas. So today, I wanted to share some highlights on how I'm working for you.

While partisan gridlock has too often gotten in the way of important progress, we have taken some key steps forward.

For instance, I fought for a historic and bipartisan bill to fix the broken Medicare payment system. Fixing this system will strengthen Medicare by ensuring seniors can see the doctors they know and trust. This is an issue Congress has failed to deal with for more than a decade and I'm proud our fix became law earlier this week.

I'm also continuing to fight for a permanent No Budget, No Pay Act. This bill says if Congress doesn't do its job and pass a responsible budget on time, then Congress doesn't get paid. And I recently kept my promise to return my congressional pension to the U.S. Treasury to pay down our debt. I won't take a pension until Social Security and Medicare are secure for our parents and grandparents.

I've also continued my work to bring jobs to Sacramento County, advocating for investment in local infrastructure and working to strengthen economic ties with growing markets in Asia, including traveling to India earlier this year with the President to build the U.S.-India partnership.

Gridlock hasn't stopped my staff and I from making government work for Sacramento County. In the past 100 days, we've helped 607 residents recover another $137,852 in benefits that they were owed. We also held 14 local events so I could hear your concerns and help you, and my office responded to another 16,090 of your letters.

These are just some of the highlights over the past 100 days, so I hope you will take a second to learn more.

I know first-hand how frustrating Washington gridlock and partisan politics can be. But I know there are good people in both parties who want to do what's right and move our country forward.

As always, I appreciate hearing from you, so please feel free to share your thoughts.

Be well,

Ami Bera, M.D.

Member of Congress
