Congressman Kevin Cramer joined a bi-partisan majority of the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation supporting the peace officers, as well as their families, who protect us every day. Included in this series of bills is H.R. 606, the Don't Tax our Fallen Public Safety Heroes Act, co-sponsored by Congressman Cramer. H.R 606 would exclude federal and state benefits paid to surviving dependents of public safety officers killed in the line of duty from federal income taxes. Currently Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations exempt federal survivors' benefits from taxation, but clarity on taxation for benefits paid by states is needed.
"The families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our communities should not have their survivor benefits taken away in federal taxes. It is the least we can do as a society to honor and to care for the loved ones of the peace officers who put their lives on the line each day to keep us safe," said Cramer.
H.R. 606 is supported by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and the National Association of Police Organizations
