DURBIN SECURES $800,000 FOR CLEAN AIR COUNTS CAMPAIGN

[CHICAGO, IL] - U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin announced today he has secured $800,000 to continue smog-reducing efforts in the Chicago metropolitan area. Durbin, who is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said that the funding was secured through the fiscal year 2005 VA-HUD appropriations bill.

"The Clean Air Counts Campaign is an innovative and cost-effective method of reducing air pollution and reducing public health costs related to air pollution," Durbin said.

The funding will provide federal support for the ongoing partnership involving the U.S. EPA, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Illinois EPA and the Delta Institute. The campaign has reduced volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxide {in the air we breathe} by nearly a half-ton per day.

Congressman Mark Kirk also contributed by securing some funding.
