DURBIN STATEMENT ON NALACC CALL FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

[CHICAGO, IL] -- U.S. Senator Dick Durbin issued the following statement after today's National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities press conference calling for comprehensive immigration reform:

"In a post 9/11 world, we certainly need to have tough immigration policies. But we have to realize that we can be tough while being fair. Our great country is a nation of immigrants and we shouldn't punish those who are looking to make a better life for their children in America.

"We really should be moving forward on policies such as the DREAM Act, which would allow students to begin the process toward becoming a permanent resident. We must maintain a balance between homeland security and the spirit of American opportunity."
