Van Hollen Statement on Budget Committee Conference Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Budget Committee Conference Report:

"The budgets put forward by the House and Senate Republicans disinvest in America, hurt the middle class, threaten retirement security for our seniors, and use gimmicky accounting tricks to falsely claim balance. It's no surprise that this conference report -- which the GOP negotiated in secret -- is just another attempt to pave the way for windfall tax breaks for the very wealthy, while telling American families to work harder but take home less.

"This budget tells our children that their education isn't a priority. It makes it harder for their parents to put food on the table and own a home. It throws millions of Americans off of their affordable health care plans. It cuts funding for research and innovation, which help power our economy. Simply put, it is a short-sighted plan that makes it harder for families to achieve the American dream.

"House Democrats will strongly oppose this conference report. We will continue to fight for the principles laid out in our alternative: economic growth with broadly shared prosperity and an investment in our nation's future success -- principles that are totally lacking in the Republican plan."
