Van Hollen Statement on April Jobs Report

Statement

Date: May 8, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Department of Labor's April Jobs Report announcing that the U.S. economy added 223,000 jobs in April:

"Today's jobs report reinforces the fact that while we've made important progress -- including 62 consecutive months of private sector job growth -- there is more work to be done.

"Far too many families in Maryland and across the country feel like they're stuck in place or falling behind. We need an agenda that puts more Americans back to work and grows our economy with more broadly shared prosperity. We need to invest in our nation's future success -- from education to scientific research to infrastructure -- to ensure we remain competitive in the 21st century. We need a tax code that rewards work instead of just wealth and makes it easier for small businesses to create jobs.

"Democrats are working hard to help working families succeed. We want to make sure they have the opportunity to buy a home, send their kids to college, and have a secure retirement. Unfortunately, as their recently passed budget demonstrates, Washington Republicans continue to push for an economy that rewards the very wealthy at the expense of everyone else -- they want to rig the system in favor of special interests, no matter the cost. I urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to put aside their partisan efforts and work with us to get the job done for American families."
