Blackburn Supports Balanced Budget for a Stronger America

Statement

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), who is a member of the Budget Committee, issued the following statement regarding House passage of the Fiscal Year 2016 House Republican Budget Resolution.

"$5.5 trillion less than what is currently projected is what our Republican budget will spend over the next decade," Blackburn said. "This is a solid step toward fiscal responsibility for our nation, both for today and future generations. There are several provisions that I have championed through the budget process that made it into the final product approved by the House. In addition, the Budget will include language to change the budget process by having agencies utilize Zero-Based Budgeting. This good government provision requires federal agencies to take stock and evaluate their programs, identify the costs and benefits of those programs, and reduce or eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs. In addition, I was successful in achieving the inclusion of a provision to allow seniors who are still working to receive a premium support for their health insurance and have additional options, if they so choose, in addition to traditional Medicare. The budget also reflects a Blackburn proposal to reduce the federal work force by 10% over the next 10 years.

"The House Budget calls for $619 billion in total defense spending in FY2016, which is over and above the President's request. I was pleased to work with my colleagues to ensure this budget reaffirms our commitment to maintaining a strong and robust national security policy. We hear regularly from our commanders and military families at Fort Campbell about the harmful effects sequestration is having on the Clarksville community. I believe Congress must continue its commitment to providing our men and women in uniform with the resources they need to protect Americans and combat the threats facing the world today. The Blackburn amendment creates a defense and military readiness deficit neutral reserve fund that will allow additional funding and flexibility for our commanders and troops.

"Chairman Price is to be commended for his leadership in crafting a budget that contains thoughtful and prudent first step reforms to begin the process of moving us away from fiscal cliffs and toward sustainable economic security. Now it is up to the Senate to do their job."
