Blackburn Introduces Bill to Protect Historic Shiloh Battlefield

Statement

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today introduced legislation to protect Shiloh National Military Park, one of Tennessee's historic treasures.

"Over two bloody days in early April of 1862, over 23 thousand Americans gave their lives at the Battle of Shiloh. General Grant's army would be victorious as Confederate forces withdrew toward Mississippi. Today there are important battlefields that have yet to be included in the national park boundary.

"The Shiloh National Military Park Boundary Adjustment Act would allow for the incorporation of some of the most pivotal areas of Shiloh that still lack adequate preservation; including the battlefields at Fallen Timbers, Russell House, and Davis Bridge.

"Conservation efforts to protect our nation's historic battlefields are about more than travel and tourism. Americans deserve the opportunity to experience the land where their countrymen died. As we conclude the sesquicentennial remembrance of the Civil War, it is important to continue to work and preserve our shared heritage and the role Tennessee played."
