Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement regarding the passing of longtime Alcorn State basketball coach Davey (Dave) Whitney:

"I was saddened by the passing of former Alcorn State basketball coach Dave Whitney. Coach Whitney's commitment to excellence propelled him to lead the first historically black college team to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament.

"My deepest condolences to Dave's wife, Bernice, five children and four grandchildren and all others whose lives were touched by this great man. I hope that they will take comfort in knowing his legacy lives on in the hearts of many," said Congressman Thompson.
