Griffith Statement on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act

Statement

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) today released the following statement on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (H.R. 1191):

"After reviewing the current state of the law, I have been convinced that without this legislation, President Obama may have the authority to lift sanctions against Iran without Congressional action. I do not believe that allowing the President to act without Congressional input is in the best interest of the United States."

"Further, another important factor in my decision to vote yes on this bill is that, without it, the President could make a deal with Iran without revealing all of the deal's details to all Members of Congress. But under this language, the President would have to reveal the details of any agreement to all Members of Congress. Also, the American public would have access to the main report."

"It is the desire of all of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. I hope President Obama will be very aggressive in negotiating with Iran, and believe that any agreement must include significant compliance verification measures. Absent such compliance measures, I will vote against the Iran Nuclear Agreement."
