This week the House passed 13 pieces of legislation to rein in the IRS, hold them accountable, and to make necessary reforms to our onerous tax code. On Wednesday, the House passed 9 pieces of common sense reform bills to prevent future abuse from the IRS and ensure honesty and accountability to the American people. I supported these bills because I believe it is critical that we require more transparency and accountability in the IRS. Additionally, the House also voted on H.R. 650, the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act and H.R. 685, the Mortgage Choice Act. I proudly supported these bills to make it easier for hardworking Americans to purchase homes and achieve the American Dream.
On Thursday, I was pleased to support two more bills that will repeal and reform parts of our tax code, H.R. 622, the Local Sales Tax Deduction Fairness Act and H.R. 1105, the Death Tax Repeal Act. Currently, taxpayers in Texas are not treated equally to taxpayers in other states because we do not have an income tax. The Local Sales Tax Deduction Fairness Act will level the playing field and make our tax code more reliable and fair for Texas business owners. I also voted to repeal the death tax because it causes irreparable harm to generations-old family farms, small businesses and locally-owned operations. I sincerely hope that my colleagues in the Senate will follow our lead and repeal this devastating tax.
