Congresswoman Chellie Pingree Statement on Announcement of Iran Nuclear Framework Agreement

Statement

"I am encouraged by the announcement yesterday of a framework agreed upon by the P5+1 and Iran, and look forward to negotiators reaching a final agreement for a comprehensive plan of action in the coming weeks. I think the parameters outlined in this interim accord, including the Iranian compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) before any relief of sanctions, give the U.S. and its allies the best chance at moving forward peacefully in our relations with Iran and the region. While I still believe we have a responsibility to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, I feel that diplomacy continues to be the best way to ensure Iran's nuclear activities are adequately monitored and inspected."
