Van Hollen Statement Following NTSB/WMATA Briefing on L'Enfant Plaza Smoke Incident

Statement

Date: Jan. 21, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement after participating in a National Capital Region Congressional Delegation meeting with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority regarding last week's deadly smoke incident at the L'Enfant Plaza Station:

"Our hearts go out to the victims of this tragedy and to the family of Carol Glover. It shouldn't take a deadly accident to identify safety shortfalls, and we need a full investigation to prevent this from ever happening again. WMATA needs to demonstrate that safeguards like communication and ventilation systems are functioning properly now to help prevent any future incident from escalating into a disaster."
