Van Hollen Statement on President Obama Signing the Stephen Beck, Jr. ABLE Act

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, the lead House Democratic sponsor of the Stephen Beck, Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, released the following statement on President Obama signing the bill into law. The new law will extend fairness to families with children with disabilities by granting equal access to tax-free savings accounts to provide for their children's future:

"Today, the Stephen Beck, Jr. ABLE Act became law after years of hard work by families across the country who never gave up the fight for equal access to tools for their loved ones to reach their fullest potential. The vision and persistence of selfless advocates like the late Stephen Beck, Jr. and many others were essential to getting this bill to the President's desk, and I'm proud to have been part of this bipartisan effort."

Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Richard Burr (R-NC) sponsored the Stephen Beck, Jr. ABLE Act in the Senate, and other original cosponsors in the House were Representatives Ander Crenshaw (R-FL), Pete Sessions (R-TX), and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). The bill was named for Stephen Beck, Jr., a driving force behind the ABLE Act and a longtime advocate for those with disabilities, who passed away shortly before the bill's passage in Congress.
