Keating Named Ranking Member of the Influential Terrorism Subcommittee

Statement

Today, Rep. Bill Keating was elected by his peers on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to serve as Ranking Member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade (TNT) Subcommittee.

Said Rep. Keating:

"In a time of growing instability and violent threats against our country and our allies, I am honored that my colleagues elected me to serve as the lead Democrat on the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade (TNT) Subcommittee. I believe this Subcommittee will greatly complement my ongoing work on the House Homeland Security Committee and my background as a District Attorney.

"The current global threat environment is evolving at a rapid pace. We are seeing a rise in transnational violence associated with foreign fighters training overseas and returning home, as well as an increased use of social media as a sophisticated tool for terrorist recruitment. The TNT Subcommittee, coupled with my membership on the Homeland Security Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee, will enhance my ability to effectively address these emerging threats in a balanced and meaningful way. Further, the TNT Subcommittee will allow me to expand upon and seek constructive solutions to critical matters impacting global security, like the proliferation of mass casualty weapons, terrorist financing, and propaganda.

"Terrorism, nonproliferation, and trade have no geographic or ideological boundaries and this subcommittee affords the opportunity to comprehensively tackle these and other international and domestic matters at the forefront of global concerns."

Last Congress, Rep. Keating served as Ranking Member on the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee on the Foreign Affairs Committee and will retain his membership on that Subcommittee.
