Rep. Dave Joyce Secures Language to Prevent Open Lake Dumping

Today, the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill from the House Appropriations Committee was released including language authored by Rep. Dave Joyce preventing the use of federal funds from being used to dump dredged materials in Lake Erie. Rep. Joyce said in a statement:

"This is a huge win for the millions of people who get their drinking water from Lake Erie. My language tightens the screws on the Army Corps of Engineers and makes it clear they can't continue to play games and potentially endanger our Great Lakes.

"The language that Rep. Joyce fought to be included in the bill is included below:

"SEC. 108. No funds in this Act shall be used for an open lake placement alternative of dredged material, after evaluating the least costly, environmentally acceptable manner for the disposal or management of dredged material originating from Lake Erie or tributaries hereto, unless it is approved under a State water quality certification pursuant to 33 U.S.C. 1341."
