Continuing her efforts to ensure funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte today voted in support of legislation that funds the agency for the remainder of the fiscal year. The bill passed the Senate on a 68-31 vote. She also voted in support of a separate measure, introduced by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), that would defund the president's 2014 executive action on immigration. That bill required 60 votes to advance and failed on a 57-42 vote.
"It's critical that we ensure continued funding for our nation's homeland security operations, and I voted in support of legislation that funds DHS for the rest of the fiscal year," said Ayotte. "I continue to oppose the president's sweeping 2014 executive action on immigration, which a court has found exceeded his legal authority, and I voted in support of a separate bill that would have defunded the president's action. While the court injunction currently prevents the administration from carrying out the president's executive action, I support ensuring that his executive action can never be carried out and further challenging his illegal actions through the court system."
During the past month, Senator Ayotte voted multiple times to advance legislation that would fund DHS and reverse the president's executive actions on immigration, which Democrats continuously blocked from being debated or amended. Earlier this week, Ayotte announced she would support a new proposal that would fund DHS and allow a separate vote on defunding the president's 2014 executive action on immigration. Senator Ayotte is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Armed Services Committee.
