After 100 Days of Political Gimmicks and Partisan Rhetoric, It's Time For Real Legislative Action on Behalf of Working Families

Statement

This Wednesday marked the 100th day of the Republican-led 114th Congress. Unfortunately, Republicans wasted this time by prioritizing political gimmicks and partisan messaging bills over substantive legislation to get things done for American families. And this Spring, they've told us to expect more of the same: Last week, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy released a memo detailing the actions House Republicans plan to take, and once again, it's filled with political rhetoric instead of a real vision for how to help Americans access the opportunities they need to find a well-paying job, send their children to college, and have a secure retirement.

Americans across the country expect their Member of Congress to stand up for them. Instead, House Republicans voted this week to repeal the estate tax, which would add $269 billion to the deficit and help the wealthiest Americans at the expense of hard-working families. Instead of pursuing policies that help those struggling to get by, such as raising the minimum wage, securing equal pay for equal work, and addressing comprehensive tax reform, House Republicans continue to make it harder for the most vulnerable to make ends meet.

Yesterday, President Obama signed the Medicare Access and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act into law. This is a victory for seniors, children, and doctors, and a prime example of how bipartisan action can be taken to meet an important challenge. I hope Republicans and Democrats in Congress can similarly work together on other critical issues in the coming weeks so we can show our constituents that we are committed to protecting the American Dream and helping them secure a place in our middle-class.
