Menendez, Booker Announce Over $400K in Federal Funding for NJ Highway Safety Programs

U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded $401,885.50 to the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety for programs to enhance traffic safety throughout New Jersey.

"As one of the most heavily traveled states in the nation, nothing is more important than keeping New Jersey's roads safe," said Sen. Menendez. "Our entire state economy depends on a safe and reliable transportation network--whether it's our residents, who traverse these routes each day as they commute to work to support their families, tourists visiting our parks and beaches, or truckers delivering goods far and wide from Ports Newark and Elizabeth. I will continue fighting to preserve the safety and improve the efficiency of all of our state's highways."

"The safety of our residents and all those who commute throughout our state is a top priority, and it is imperative that we invest in programs that enhance the safety of New Jersey's roadways," said Sen. Booker. "The funding announced today will ensure safety on our roads while improving the vital arteries necessary for doing business and supporting jobs throughout the New Jersey. As ranking member on the Surface Transportation Subcommittee of the Commerce Committee in the Senate, I will continue fighting for federal dollars that improve the infrastructure of our state and country."

The funding was awarded through the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety received:

* $230,339.89 for State and Community Highway Safety
* $171,545.61 in Occupant Protection Grants

These grants can be used to implement systems to: promote, track, and enforce seatbelt and child seat safety programs; ignition interlock and impaired driving prevention programs; motorcyclist safety programs; and efforts to improve New Jersey's traffic safety information systems. The funding will be distributed to programs designed to reduce highway deaths and injuries from drunk driving, unsafe operation of a motorcycle, and riding unrestrained or improperly restrained in motor vehicles.
