Scalise Statement on Fifth Anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster

Congressman Steve Scalise (R-La.) today released the following statement regarding the five-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon disaster that occurred on British Petroleum's Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Today, our thoughts go out to the loved ones of the 11 people who lost their lives during the Deepwater Horizon disaster," Rep. Scalise said. "Without question, those lost is the most devastating impact of the disaster, but April 20, 2010 also unleashed an environmental tragedy that is still impacting Louisiana and its people today. While we are still feeling its effects, this tragedy has made us stronger as we continue to work to improve our state. We have seen increased safety standards on deep-water production platforms in the Gulf, we have seen an increased spill response plan from the energy industry, and we will continue working to ensure the preservation of our beloved wetlands.

"It is my hope that at the five-year anniversary of this disaster we see the resiliency of the people of south Louisiana continue to prevail as we fight to protect our state's culture and unique way of life."
