Lujan: House Republican Budget Stands in Stark Contrast to Democrats' Efforts to Support Hard-Working Families

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today after voting against House Republicans' budget for Fiscal Year 2016.

"A budget is a statement of values, and the contrast between the House Republican budget that puts special interests first and the House Democratic budget that invests in growing the middle class could not be clearer. House Republicans provide tax breaks to billionaires, yet shortchange investments in early education that are vital to our children's future and infrastructure that are essential to putting more New Mexicans to work. House Democrats invest in job training programs, education at every level, and clean energy -- critical components for strengthening our nation's competitiveness and building a stronger economy that creates more jobs and opportunities for the people of New Mexico.

"Once again, House Republicans call for the end of Medicare as we know it by replacing it with a voucher that fails to cover the cost of health care for New Mexico's seniors, leaving them to pay higher out-of-pocket costs. At a time when New Mexico ranks near the top in child hunger, the Republican budget lays the foundation for cuts to nutrition programs that help families put food on the table during difficult times.

"While I may not agree with every provision in each alternative Democratic budget, they all stand in stark contrast to the Republican plan by supporting hard-working families through investments in infrastructure, affordable college education, and growing paychecks."
