Location: Santa Fe, NM

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today to commemorate César Chávez Day, which is celebrated on March 31.

"The United States has been built on the foundation of men and women who refused to accept injustice and who fought to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. Today, as we reflect on the legacy of César Chávez, we remember a man who dedicated his life to the cause of equality and led the effort for social justice for working men and women.

"A son of migrant workers who grew up during the Great Depression, César Chávez endured in his belief that the American Dream was not exclusive. He harnessed the steadfast power of working people and defied the forces of discrimination and injustice in order to win the basic rights and protections that all workers deserve.

"Today we are reminded that we are at our best when we come together united in the cause for justice, but we are also reminded that this fight is ongoing. We are compelled to take up this cause and endure, just as César Chávez did, in order to secure a future that is worthy of the dreams and aspirations of all people."
