Zinke Calls on House to Advance Little Shell Recognition

Today Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke called on the House Natural Resources Committee and Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaskan Affairs to take up legislation to extend federal recognition to the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Cree. The U.S. Senate Indian Affairs Committee today advanced the legislation out of committee by a voice vote. In January, Zinke introduced his first piece of legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives which called for federal recognition. The legislation is awaiting action in the House Committee on Natural Resources and the full Senate body.

"The people of the Little Shell Tribe have waited long enough for federal recognition," said Rep. Zinke. "Montana's delegation is united behind the Little Shell. I am encouraged by the movement in the Senate, and I urge Chairmen Rob Bishop and Don Young to advance this important legislation."

The State of Montana recognized the Little Shell in 2000; however they have been seeking federal recognition for more than 35 years.
