Rep. Gosar Advances Legislative Action to Prohibit Funding for Common Core

Statement

Today, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released the following statement after submitting a funding rider request with 33 of his colleagues urging the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies to prohibit any funds in fiscal year 2016 from being used to fund Common Core:

"Over the last couple years, the Obama Administration has lured more than 40 states into adopting common core standards in order to receive significant grants and federal funds. Most states now have buyer's remorse as this extortion has been nothing short of a disaster. Unfortunately, as the federal government's role in education has increased, test scores and performance have not improved. Common Core has led to boredom and complacency in classrooms throughout the country, shackling students and teachers as most days are now spent teaching to standardized tests.

"Standards for education should be established by local communities, parents and teachers, not bureaucrats in Washington D.C. threatening to withhold funding. As a father of three, I know that a good education is critical to the future prosperity of our nation's youth. That is why I am committed to reforming our broken education system and ending Common Core once and for all. I urge the Appropriations Committee to adopt this commonsense rider that is consistent with federal law."
