SENATOR MURKOWSKI'S COMMENTS ON BASE REALIGNMENT AND CLOSURE LIST
Today, Senator Lisa Murkowski issued the following statement regarding the Department of Defense's placement of Alaska military bases on the Base Realignment and Closure list:
"I am disappointed in the Department of Defense's proposed reduction of over 4,600 positions, military and civilian, in Alaska over the 2006-2011 time period.
"The estimated loss of approximately 4,700 jobs, direct and in-direct, in the Fairbanks area alone would be a huge blow to that community's economic and social wellbeing - not just from tax revenue or a local business standpoint, but also the number of families that would be leaving, impacting schools, churches, and community services.
"There is still a long way to go in the BRAC process. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission must still conduct hearings and visit each facility before it submits its recommendations to the President. I am confidant that the Commission will recognize the strategic importance of Alaska's bases to our national security."
