Newsletter: My State of the Union Guest

Statement

Date: Jan. 21, 2015

Dear Neighbors,

I was honored to have Homira Wardak as my guest at this year's State of the Union. As a student studying biological sciences at Harper College, Homira understands firsthand the importance of a quality education. I am inspired by Homira's strong work ethic and dedication to her academic studies.

I am proud to have Harper College and so many other educational institutions and organizations in the 8thDistrict.

One Million Degrees, an organization committed to supporting community college students in all aspects of life, has partnered with Harper College to support its most high-achieving students such as Homira. The program helps students thrive not only in the classroom, but also when they enter the workforce.

As President Obama discussed in his address, all students should have access to higher education. I applaud the President's initiative to improve access to community colleges and create more educational opportunities for students. I am also encouraged by the President's new goal for the United States to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.

America's students deserve every opportunity to achieve the American Dream. In a time when having a college degree is becoming increasingly necessary, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that all students have access to quality higher education and are prepared to compete in the global economy.

Sincerely
