KMAland - Congressman Young Excited to be Working on a Budget

Iowa 3rd District Congressman David Young talked about the U.S. House releasing a $3.8 trillion budget proposal on Tuesday during an interview Wednesday morning on KMA News.

That proposal featured significant increases in defense spending and Young is firm in his commitment to allocate more dollars to our nation's defense.
"I think first and foremost our government is there to protect us from evil.

Evil being those that want to take away our liberties and our freedoms and our rights. As you see what's going on around the world, there are some very nefarious folks out there. Putin, Assad, and ISIS. So we need to make sure we keep our defense up and that we are protecting Americans and protecting the homeland."

Young says in addition to strengthening our defense capabilities, he's perhaps most proud that this Congress has finally fulfilled one of it's legal obligations.

"You know we're doing a budget though, which is just an incredible thing, right? We haven't done one, you know a full resolution through the House but once in maybe the last five years and it is the law. So we're doing it and this week the budget committee is going to hold some hearings and do a review. And then as early as next week on the House floor we'll be voting on it. This budget balances in ten years without raising taxes. It does reign in spending by $5.5 trillion. It repeals Obamacare. It calls for tax reform and simplification. And it does address defense spending which was really gutted I think in an unprecedented way through that wonderful word we learned three or four years ago, sequestration as you know."

Again Young says a lot of work still remains on finalizing a budget even though a lot of work was put into Tuesday's resolution.

"It's non-binding. It never reaches the President's desk. But it requires follow-up legislation here in Congress to implement the changes and sometimes that can be a challenge, but that's why we're here."

Some have criticized this House version for the way it approaches Medicare. Young believes the resolution actually strengthens Medicare and Social Security moving forward.

"We're protecting our seniors and we always will. It's just a matter of how we do it and we're obligated to and as you know it's not an entitlement, Social Security and Medicare. We pay into this. We need to get it back and we need to make sure that it's solvent. But we need leadership overall from the President as well as Congress to address this to make sure it's solvent and there for future generations."
