McCaul Statement on Meeting with Secret Service Director Clancy

Today, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement after meeting with U.S. Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy and other lawmakers regarding a recent incident where two senior Secret Service agents, allegedly driving under the influence, disrupted an active bomb investigation:

Chairman McCaul: "Today's briefing from Director Clancy brought more questions than answers. Everyone at the Secret Service except the director seemed to have known that two senior agents, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, disrupted the integrity of an active investigation into a bomb threat. This is completely unacceptable. Moreover, I was shocked to learn the agency did not conduct any type of preliminary assessment, but immediately handed off the investigation to DHS's Office of Inspector General (OIG).

"Moving forward, the OIG must conduct a rigorous investigation so Congress and the American people soon know the true facts of what happened. I will be following up on their investigation, but it is past time to take a holistic look at the Secret Service to address its cultural and foundational problems. It is time for Congress to direct specific mandates to fix this agency and I will be moving forward with legislation. I look forward to continuing to work with the other relevant Committees to restore the Secret Service."
